Pegboard Display Walls for Shops and Showrooms in Malaysia
A display wall in a shop or showroom has a harder life than a workshop board. Stock changes every season, hooks are moved every week, and customers pull products off at odd angles. Hardboard and MDF pegboard look fine on opening day; in Malaysian humidity the holes wear oval, the panel bows, and the hooks start to droop. Steel pegboard keeps its holes and its shape, can be wiped clean, and can stand on its own on support poles when there is no wall to fix it to. This guide covers sizes, colours, accessories, free-standing options and what a project costs.
Direct answer: For a shop or showroom display wall in Malaysia, use powder-coated steel pegboard rather than hardboard or MDF: it keeps its hole shape under daily hook changes, does not swell in humidity and wipes clean. Standard Tanko boards come in five colours from RM168.70; custom panels go up to 8 x 4 ft, larger walls are made by joining panels, and the board can stand on its own on support poles where there is no wall.
What a display wall has to survive
Retail and showroom displays fail in predictable ways, and almost all of them come from the board, not the products on it:
- Holes wear oval. Every time a hook is pulled out at an angle, a fibreboard hole gets a little wider. After a few re-merchandising cycles the hooks droop and products hang crooked.
- The panel bows. Hardboard and MDF take up moisture in Malaysian humidity, especially near air-conditioning that switches off at night.
- Nowhere to fix it. Showrooms with glass frontage, rented units with no-drill walls and open-plan floors need a display that stands on its own.
- Heavier products. Demo screens, speakers, tools and appliances need more than a decorative hook.
A real installation: pegboard on support poles
This showroom needed display surfaces in an open space without solid walls. The answer was black steel pegboard mounted on support poles: one free-standing partition with a laminate lower panel, and a backboard rising behind the reception counter. Both take hooks, shelves and screen arms anywhere on the face, so the display can be rearranged without tools.
Board sizes, colours and custom panels
| Option | Size | Finish | Guide price |
|---|---|---|---|
| KQ-306A | 900 x 450mm | Steel, 5 colours | from RM168.70 |
| KQ-310A | 1,500 x 450mm | Steel, 5 colours | RM289.20 |
| KQ-412A | 1,800 x 600mm | Steel, 5 colours | RM433.80 |
| KQ-414A | 2,100 x 600mm | Steel, 5 colours | RM494.05 |
| KQ-306AS | 900 x 450mm | #304 stainless steel | RM397.65 |
| Custom panel | up to 8 x 4 ft (about 2,440 x 1,220mm) | Steel | on quotation |
Colours are black, white, grey, red and blue. Every board uses the same hole pitch, so hooks move between sizes and colours. A wall wider or taller than one panel is made by joining panels edge to edge; Primaxs has built joined walls for Samsung in Malaysia. All nine standard sizes are listed in the metal pegboard guide.
Wall-mounted, free-standing or a ready-built stand
| Option | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted pegboard | Shop walls, back-of-house, stockrooms | Needs a solid wall and proper fixings; cheapest per square metre |
| Pegboard on support poles | Showrooms, partitions, counter backboards, glass-fronted units | Stands on its own; sized to the space |
| Ready-built display stand | Shop floors, exhibitions, pop-up counters | Tanko DA, DB, DC and DD stands: W1013 x D496 x H1663mm, black or white, drawer base, from RM1,674.95 |
Accessories that matter in retail
- Hooks for packaged goods: Tanko metal hooks from 50 to 300mm long, rated 3 to 6kg; plastic hooks in colours for category coding; stainless hooks for food or wet areas.
- Shelves: the KP-17 shelf, W900 x D300mm, takes 50kg (RM156.65), for boxed products and demo units.
- Screen arms: the KP-4802 monitor arm holds a screen up to 27 inches and 12kg (RM638.65), useful for demo videos in electronics and smart-home showrooms.
- Trays, clips and bins: for small parts, cables and accessories; the louvred KH-306A board takes hanging bins directly.
Back-of-house: cleaning stations and shadow boards
Retail chains use the same steel boards behind the scenes: a cleaning-tool station with clips for brooms and hooks for dustpans, outlined so staff can see at a glance what is missing. Spring clips and U-hooks hold long handles; single hooks take dustpans and brushes. See shadow boards and 5S tool control for layout and outlining.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a pegboard in a custom size?
Yes. Standard Tanko steel boards run from 900 x 450mm to 2,100 x 600mm, and custom panels can be made up to 8 x 4 ft (about 2,440 x 1,220mm). For a wall bigger than one panel, boards are joined edge to edge into one display wall; Primaxs has done this for Samsung in Malaysia.
Can a pegboard display stand on its own without a wall?
Yes. Pegboard can be mounted on support poles to make a free-standing partition, a room divider or a counter backboard, which suits showrooms with glass walls or open floor plans. Tanko also makes ready-built steel display stands (W1013 x D496 x H1663mm, black or white) with a drawer base, from RM1,674.95.
What colours do steel pegboards come in?
The Tanko KQ-3 range comes in black, white, grey, red and blue, and all colours share the same hole pitch, so hooks move between boards. A #304 stainless steel board is available for wet or food areas.
How much weight can a pegboard display hold?
It depends on the accessory: Tanko metal hooks are rated 3 to 6kg each depending on type, stainless hooks 5kg, plastic hooks 2 to 4kg, the KP-17 shelf 50kg and the KP-4802 screen arm up to 12kg for a 27-inch screen. Spread heavy items over several hooks or use a shelf.
Is steel pegboard better than MDF or wooden pegboard for a shop?
For a display that is changed often, usually yes. Wooden and fibreboard pegboard can swell in humid rooms and the holes wear oval under daily hook loads, so hooks loosen and sag. Steel holds its hole shape, takes heavier items and wipes clean. Wood is cheaper and fine for light, decorative displays that rarely change.
Do you deliver and install pegboard displays?
Yes. Delivery and installation are free in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, and Primaxs delivers across Malaysia, including East Malaysia, and to Singapore, with outstation delivery quoted separately on the quotation.
