Metal Pegboard in Malaysia: Sizes, Hooks, Prices and When Steel Beats Wood

Most pegboards sold in Malaysia are made for homes: fibreboard, wood or plastic panels for a study wall or a craft corner. A workshop asks more of a board. Every time a spanner comes off at an angle the hook levers against the hole, dozens of times a shift, in a humid building. That is where a steel pegboard earns its price.

Malaysia's year-round humidity is the quiet deciding factor. A board that absorbs moisture or rusts at a chipped hole will not hold its layout, and once outlines stop matching hooks, people stop using the board.

The KQ-3 range is painted steel in five colours: grey, white, red, blue and black. Every board uses the same hole pitch, so hooks move freely between sizes.

The louvred KH-306A is the odd one out. Instead of round holes it has horizontal ribs that take hanging bins directly, which suits small parts rather than hand tools. It can share a wall with pegboard panels.

Pegboard hooks and accessories: what holds what

A pegboard is only as useful as its hooks. Tanko's accessories fall into three hook ranges plus specialist holders:

Match the material to the room: steel hooks for general workshop use and the highest loads, plastic where loads are light and colour-coding helps, stainless steel wherever the board is washed down. How to size a pegboard wall

1. Collect the tools that belong at this station, and only those.
2. Lay them out flat on the floor or a bench in the order they are used.
3. Measure the area they cover, then add about a third for tools you will add later.
4. Pick the board height first. 450mm boards suit the space above a workbench; 600mm boards suit open walls. Then pick widths, combining boards for long walls.
5. Count the hooks by type from the layout, plus spares. This is the list we quote from.

Keep the most-used tools between waist and shoulder height. Heavy or rarely used items go low; nothing heavy goes above head height.

Wall, workbench or trolley?

Because the hole pitch is the same across the range, one set of hooks works in three places:

• On the wall, as a tool wall or shadow board for a whole bay.
• On a workbench, on the back panel or uprights, so the tools for that bench stay at that bench. See workbenches.

Free-standing hanger racks carry pegboard and louvre panels where there is no usable wall, for example in the middle of an open production floor.

Installing on Malaysian walls

Most factory walls here are brick or concrete, which hold a steel board well with the right anchors. Two checks before drilling: make sure there is clearance behind the board so hooks seat fully through the holes, and make sure the fixings are rated for the full load of tools you plan to hang. A pegboard becomes a tool-control system when each tool gets a marked outline: a gap then shows at a glance what is missing.
