Tool Trolley vs Tool Chest vs Tool Cabinet: Which Does Your Workshop Need?
Walk into any tool shop in Malaysia and the same steel box is sold as a tool trolley, a tool chest, a roller cabinet and a tool cabinet. The names overlap, but the jobs do not. Which one you need comes down to three questions: does the work move or stay put, how heavy is the heaviest drawer, and is the floor shared.
Direct answer: Buy a tool trolley when tools and parts travel to the job and loads are light. Add a tool chest when you need many shallow drawers in a small footprint. Choose a tool cabinet when drawers are heavy, tools are shared, or security matters. Put it on castors (a roller cabinet) if it has to move bay to bay.
The three formats in one line each
- Tool trolley — a mobile frame of shelves, sometimes with a drawer or two, that carries tools and parts to where the work is. Also sold as a service cart or trolley tool box.
- Tool chest — a box of shallow drawers that sits on a bench or on top of a cabinet. In the trade, a top chest sits on a roller cabinet to make a tool chest and trolley combination.
- Tool cabinet — a floor-standing drawer cabinet. Fixed versions stand on leveller screws; mobile versions (roller cabinets) run on castors. Either way, the defining features are rated drawer slides and a central lock.
Side-by-side comparison

When a tool trolley is the right call
A trolley earns its place when the job moves and the tools have to go with it: assembly cells, line-side maintenance, a technician working round a vehicle or a machine. Tanko makes three:
- EKA-3M — open trolley, W900 × D485 × H850mm, three adjustable shelves with PVC mats, a side tray, and a panel that takes perforated-board hooks. From RM1,024.25.
- EKB-3M — the same format with drawers added, for a mix of open shelf and enclosed small parts. 15 variants, from RM1,060.40.
- EKA-3MS — #304 stainless steel, with a 100%-extension drawer rated 35kg on a silent buffer slide. Built for washdown areas, food and pharmaceutical sites. From RM1,674.95.
All three run on 4-inch PU castors rated to 400kg, so load capacity is rarely the deciding factor. The choice is between open shelves, which are fast to grab from, and drawers, which keep dust and loose parts contained.
Three-tier service carts sell for under RM100 on Malaysian marketplaces and are fine for a home garage. In a production area, three things separate a working trolley from a disposable one: the castor rating, whether a shelf takes a point load without bowing, and whether the panel and accessories outlast the first year.
When a tool chest makes sense
A tool chest solves a space problem. Sockets, spanners, pliers, measuring tools and bits are small and flat, and they are easiest to find one layer deep in shallow drawers. A chest puts a stack of those drawers at eye level, on a bench or on top of a cabinet, without using more floor.
On Tanko's range the chest is not a separate loose box. It is an optional top chest on the EGM-1 and EGL-1 mobile cabinets and the EA-7, EA-10 and EA-12 heavy-duty cabinets. It is specified and quoted with the cabinet, not bought later as a box balanced on a lid.
When you need a tool cabinet
A cabinet is the answer once drawers get heavy or tools are shared. Two specifications decide whether it keeps working: the drawer slide and the lock.
| Tanko line | Type | Drawer rating | Base | Guide price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EGA-1 | Fixed, standard | 45kg, 95% extension | Leveller screws | from RM1,602.65 |
| EGA-2M | Mobile, standard | 45kg, 95% extension | 4" PU castors, 400kg | from RM1,662.90 |
| EGL-1 | Mobile, standard, side tray and panel | 45kg, 95% extension | 5" × 2" PU castors, 400kg | from RM2,410.00 |
| ELA-1 | Mobile, standard | 50kg, 90% extension | 5" × 2" PU castors, 400kg | from RM2,626.90 |
| EA-7 / EA-10 / EA-12 | Fixed, heavy duty (H700 / H1000 / H1200) | 100kg standard, 200kg T drawer at 100% extension | Leveller screws | from RM2,651.00 / RM3,313.75 / RM3,482.45 |
| EGM-1 | Mobile, standard, side tray and panel | 45kg, 95% extension | 4" PU castors, 400kg | from RM2,711.25 |
| ELS-2 | Mobile, drawers plus shelved cupboard | 60kg per shelf | 4" PU castors, 400kg | from RM2,819.70 |
| EA-7M | Mobile, heavy duty | 100kg, 90% extension | 4" × 2" PU castors, 1,000kg | from RM3,627.05 |
The pattern is simple. The standard lines (EGA, EGM, EGL, ELA) suit hand tools and power tools. The heavy-duty EA range is for gauges, fixtures, dies and dense tooling that would overload a lighter slide. Every line carries a central lock, which matters most on a cabinet that moves: an unlocked cabinet on wheels is how tooling leaves a workshop.
How many drawers should a tool trolley or cabinet have?
This is the question people ask most, and drawer count is the wrong way to answer it. Seven drawers sized for the catalogue photo will still waste half their volume. Size by height instead:
- Lay the tool set out and sort it into height bands.
- Shallow drawers for spanners, sockets, screwdrivers and measuring tools, one layer deep. Tanko's 50mm and 75mm heavy-duty drawers give 35mm and 57mm of usable height.
- Medium drawers (100–150mm, 82–132mm usable) for power tools and larger hand tools.
- Deep drawers (200–400mm, 182–382mm usable) for impact guns, cases and consumables.
- Leave one drawer spare for growth. Tool sets only get bigger.
Then check the weight of the heaviest drawer against the slide rating. If it is close to 45kg, step up to a 100kg heavy-duty drawer rather than relying on the margin.
Five questions that settle it
- Does the work move, or the worker? Moving work: trolley or roller cabinet. Fixed work: fixed cabinet.
- What does the heaviest drawer weigh? Under 45kg: standard line. Over that: heavy-duty EA.
- Are the tools shared? If so, choose a cabinet with a central lock rather than an open trolley.
- What is the floor like? Smooth epoxy suits 4-inch castors. Rough concrete, expansion joints and ramps favour the 5" × 2" castors on the EGL-1 and ELA-1.
- Is it wet? Washdown, food and pharmaceutical areas need stainless: the EKA-3MS trolley.
Combinations that work in Malaysian workshops
- Automotive service bay: a roller cabinet with top chest per technician, plus one fixed heavy-duty cabinet for shared specialist tools. See automotive workshops.
- Production cell: an EKB-3M drawer trolley per cell, with a shadow board on the wall for the tools that never leave the station.
- Maintenance store or tool room: EA-10 or EA-12 heavy-duty cabinets with 200kg T drawers for gauges and fixtures. See CNC machining and tool rooms.
- Food, beverage and pharma: the EKA-3MS stainless trolley. See food and beverage.
- Packing line: the EKK-1M packing cart (W1300 × D700 × H1800mm) with a roll holder, tabletop cutter and hook panel.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a tool chest and a tool cabinet?
A tool chest is a box of shallow drawers that sits on a bench or on top of another unit. A tool cabinet is a floor-standing drawer unit, either fixed or on castors. On Tanko cabinets the chest is an optional top unit that adds drawers at eye level without taking more floor space.
Is a tool trolley the same as a roller cabinet?
Not quite. A tool trolley is usually open shelving on castors, sometimes with one or two drawers, built to carry tools and parts to the job. A roller cabinet is a full drawer cabinet on castors, with a central lock. Tanko sells both: the EKA-3M and EKB-3M trolleys, and the EGA-2M, EGM-1, EGL-1, ELA-1, ELS-2 and EA-7M mobile tool cabinets.
How many drawers should a tool trolley or tool cabinet have?
Specify by drawer height, not drawer count. Spanners, sockets and screwdrivers belong in shallow drawers in a single layer; power tools in medium drawers; bulky items in deep drawers. Lay the tools out, group them by height, then pick the cabinet whose drawer mix matches. Tanko heavy-duty drawers come from 50mm to 400mm tall.
How much does a tool cabinet cost in Malaysia?
Tanko guide prices start from RM1,024.25 for the EKA-3M trolley, RM1,602.65 for the EGA-1 fixed tool cabinet, RM1,662.90 for the EGA-2M mobile cabinet and RM2,651.00 for the EA-7 heavy-duty cabinet, before drawer and accessory options. Delivery and installation are free in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
Which is best for a home garage?
For occasional home use, a light marketplace tool chest or three-tier service cart is usually enough. Tanko cabinets are built for workshops and factories where drawers are loaded and opened every shift, castors cross rough floors, and tools are shared between people.
Can I put a perforated board on a tool trolley?
Yes. The panels on the EKA-3M, EKB-3M, EGM-1, EGL-1, ELA-1 and ELS-2 accept standard Tanko perforated-board hooks, so the most-used tools can hang in view on the trolley itself.
